He pulled away and made for the gate, but Archer was faster and held him against the wall. ‘I must. I don’t know where it came from, or why so fast, but it’s happened. If you’re telling me you can’t feel the same way then… You still can’t live like this. I can’t bear to think of you hanging from a rope or begging for food.’

‘I don’t beg.’ Silas struggled, but Archer’s grip was firm. ‘You don’t want a boy what’s used like me. You know what I am and where I’ve been. You can’t love a rat like me, no-one can.’

‘Archer, for God’s sake!’ Thomas was at the opening, a silhouette against an increasing glow of flames.

Archer heard nothing but Silas’ words, and they cut his heart.

Silas wriggled free. ‘Fecks, get them safe,’ he shouted and was gone.

‘Silas!’

‘Archer!’ Thomas was at his side, pulling his arm.

Free of the yard, Archer was instantly aware of the danger. He sniffed back the tears, breathed away emotion and took control. He had to. An army of men filled the street. They were closing on them, shouting, angrily waving fists and flares, batons and blades. They had no focus, they were there to frighten, and they were doing a damn fine job.

The Ukrainian stepped in front of Archer and pulled Thomas behind.

‘Quick, with me,’ he ordered, drawing a knife from his coat. ‘And shut mouths.’

‘It’s another bloody Russian Jew,’ a man yelled, and a cry went up loud enough to shake Archer’s lungs.

‘West.’ Fecker ordered. ‘Here.’ He pushed them towards the advancing crowd.

Silas was gone, and as much as Archer wanted to run after him, Thomas was his responsibility too. He took his wrist, running beside Fecker diagonally across the street. They were heading for a narrow alleyway barely big enough for two and Archer saw Fecker’s strategy. It was easy to defend.

He had no time for a battle plan, and Fecker had no intention to fight. He pushed Archer into the alley.

‘Straight to end. Right, left, to the river. Safe there. Go west.’
